Life at Sea

Getting the Blade Down

Woah, this baby's heavy!

Helo half way into hangar for blade change

These are sequence shots of a rotor blade change we had to do. This took place just after we left Lisbon and following our transmission change. Luckily for us the weather cooperated, and we didn't encounter any rough seas!

CIWS

Here are some of the systems we use for self-defence. The Main Gun (above) fires 57mm rounds at a rate of about 3 per second. Its purpose is to engage missiles, aircraft and ships at medium range (about 5 NM). Above right, is the Phalanx Close-In Weapons System, designed to protect the ship from missiles that have penetrated its outer defences. To the right is a picture of the ship firing a chaff rocket, used to decoy incoming missiles.

Burial at Sea for a WWII Vet. Padre Darryl Levy officiated.

Once in awhile the ship does damage control exercises. We try to make the scenarios as realistic as possible by using charged hoses, and smoke grenades.

On "Battle of the Atlantic Sunday" our chaplain performed a Burial at Sea. They don't happen often, and the ceremony is quite moving. This burial was for the cremated remains of a WWII Naval Veteran.
