Mayport to Lisbon

March 31 - Apr 16 (Happy Birthday, Dad!), 2001

Well, where to start?

Lisbon is a beautiful town, full of history, and culture... and a night life that never ends! There are a plethora of things to keep you busy here in Lisbon. Pretty much anything you can think of you can probably find here, (except maybe a theme park... they are all in Florida!) There are museums covering a multitude of themes ranging from toys to ceramics to art to war to history. Several Castles dot the surrounding area, including the Portuguese Palace in Sintra, and a very old Moorish ruin in the same town. Lisboa (the Portuguese name) even had it's own Castelo de St. Jorge, atop the tallest of the seven hills in town. It's very beautiful, and like most of the castles in the area, demonstrates varying forms of architecture from various eras. There's even an old Aqua Duct which still carries water from the hills over the valleys into town. An Aqua Duct is really quite a marvel of engineering. They look like massive bridges, this one about 150 feet above the ground, spanning about 1 mile between hill tops. It is all made of stone, and was constructed about 200-300 years ago. These were popular Roman constructions however the one in Lisbon is Portuguese.

Don't forget to check out "The Fleet" page; I've updated the photos there. There is also a new section under "The Boys" for the firefighters. There are a lot of photos so I made links to two other pages on the bottom of the screen. One is a 'Work' Page, and one is a 'Play' page. Be sure to check them out!

Here's a taste of the things we saw in Lisbon. Several of the guys went out into the country to other towns to get a flavour for the local culture. Luke and I went to Fatima and Sintra, and Jason and Mark went to Porto. We all had a great time.
These last two photos were taken from Castelo de St. Jorge, looking down towards the water. You can see the mast of our ship at the water's edge, just to the right of the twin cranes.

CSNFL and the Maj, talking the talk...CSNFL, Commander Standing Naval Forces Atlantic... and a few monentos!

The Admiral of the NATO Fleet (he's the Really Big Cheese) came over to our Ship to see how we operate while at sea. He's Portuguese, and took over from the American Admiral in Mayport. The staff positions on NATO are very long... he and his staff will be with the NATO fleet for one year.
Left: The Maj can be seen here trying to demonstrate how competent and professional the Air Department is, and how he can depend on us for any mission he wants to throw at us. While the Maj was distracting him, we 'borrowed' his helmet and pasted a few stickers on the back so he'll remember us after we leave in July! (snicker snicker!)
